Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is a set of three pivotal modern-day corporate and business practices that highlight core values of multiplicity and equality. The concept strongly revolves around respecting and embracing differences among individuals based on their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, neurodiversity and more. However, despite recent efforts from many enterprises to improve their work environment, discrimination and microaggressions are still very well present and experienced by many.

84 %

of the people interviewed in a McKinsey study had experienced microaggressions

It’s essential to recognize that DEI extends beyond being a mere catchphrase used for superficial gains while neglecting its core objective. Its purpose is to truly recognize and put forth the value and power of a diverse workplace and create an environment where everyone is respected and taken into consideration based on equity. More than just a fluffy buzzword, DEI plays a vital role in creating an overarching culture that supports differences, fairness, and most importantly, equal opportunities for all.

While these three dimensions all work towards a more just work environment, they each possess distinctive attributes worth understanding.

What are the differences between diversity, equity, and inclusion?

Diversity: Diversity is and encourages the richness of difference in people’s experiences and perspectives based on race, ethnicity, political beliefs, religion, disabilities, sex, gender, socio-economic status, and more. It commonly aims to enhance representation of unalike identities within a community.

Equity: Equity refers to fair and just practices that lead to equal outcomes through the even-handed distribution of resources. Unlike equality, which treats everyone the same regardless of differences, equity recognizes and addresses additional factors and disparities.

Inclusion: Inclusion embodies an active, intentional, and continuous process that tackles privilege, inequalities, and perceives differences as a strength rather than a weakness or obstacle.

Diversity is nothing without inclusion

You might be surprised to know that a Mckinsey survey revealed that 84 % of the people interviewed had experienced microaggressions in the workplace. On the bright side, companies have taken steps towards the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion into their hiring process, policies, and overall workplace culture in the last few years.

Inclusive teams are said to be up to 35% more productive

and make better decisions over 87% of the time

There is a large range of benefits that can come from integrating conscientious DEI initiatives and policies for your employees, clients, and business. According to a Linkedin study from 2022, inclusive teams are said to be up to 35% more productive and make better decisions over 87% of the time. This alone shows the volume of the impact that a DEI team or strategy can have on your team’s well being and performance. From making sure that everyone feels included and heard, reaching a wider audience and even hitting your financial goal, a proper strategy can help take you and yours very far.

However, a good DEI strategy usually manifests itself through non-performative actions and is about more than just appearances. The improvement in reputation and business outcome should only be taken as an extra side effect, not the main driver of a company’s initiatives. Allow us to assist you in crafting a comprehensive and inclusive digital presence focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion, harmonizing seamlessly with your core beliefs. Together, let’s embark on a journey towards a brighter more impactful future.
